Pangu 盤古 (P’an-ku)

For our broken origins and broken languages we piece ourselves with other beings of the land, rivers, forest and sea.

Our silhouetted culture murmurs to us in dreams of the past.

We remember fragments.

We hope our broken memories play melodies together.

That we come to this land as guests with respect and solidarity for Whadjuk Noongar people and hope they have their land back one day.

 Pangu

Pangu is a collaborative artwork created by Gok-Lim Finch and Gabby Loo. This temporary public artwork was installed on Northbridge William Street’s pavement outside the Moon Cafe, Salvation Army and Chemist Warehouse.

The artwork’s design contains accumulated abstract symbols, depicting the following:

  • Perspectives of the Chinese mythology story of Pangu and regions of Asia where the Pangu creation story originated from.

  • Silheouttes of the Yellow river and the Derbarl Yerrigan/Swan River, flora such as everlastings, orchids, Geraldton wax flowers, peonies and petals.

  • The yellow circles are derived from dimsum bamboo steamer paper linings, which can also be perceived as seeds.

The poetry featured in this artwork was written by Gok-Lim Finch.

We thank Aisyah Aaqil-Sumito for their assistance in fabricating the stencils for this artwork.

Pangu is a public artwork commissioned by the City of Vincent, apart of the Platform Project June to October 2019 - a community led initiative that invited local creatives and artists to create temporary art spaces in the City of Vincent.
